Abstract: »In this article, the author conducts a literary and comparative analysis of one of the most tragic tales in the Bible, the story of Amnon and Tamar – a tale of moral failure that includes rape and bloodshed within the house of King David. The author demonstrates in his analysis the broader context of the story, closely relating it to the episode of David and Bat-Sheba and the trilogy of Absalom’s tales, which includes the rape of Tamar by Amnon, the murder of Amnon by Absalom, and Absalom’s rebellion, which ends in his death. The author’s main argument in this paper is that the biblical writer weaves various hidden literary motifs into the objective description of the story, creating a complex system of analogies to help the reader understand the moral lesson through a literary, linguistic, and stylistic analysis of the plot, background, and characters. The article is divided into three main parts. The first part provides two short introductions: one about the literary design of narratives in the Bible and the other to clarify Tamar’s family lineage. The second part of the article is a literary analysis of the story of Amnon and Tamar, focusing on the main elements, which include the context of the story, the exposition, Amnon’s love, the wisdom of his friend Jonadab, the rape, the hatred, and the expulsion. The third part is a comparative analysis of the story of Amnon and Tamar with the following biblical stories and texts: the story of Joseph, the story of Dina’s rape, the story of Judah and Tamar, and finally, the Song of Songs. The author uses many sources from rabbinic literature, ranging from Talmudic times through the Middle Ages to modern times. Much of this literature has been translated into Croatian from Hebrew and Aramaic for the first time by the author.« (Source: Nova prisutnost)
